How to Maintain A StruXure Pergola

Proper care and maintenance are essential to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your StruXure pergola. Follow these guidelines to keep your outdoor structure in excellent condition!

Regular Cleaning

  • Routine Maintenance: Clean your pergola at least once a year, or more frequently if dirt and debris accumulate. Start by using a soft-bristle brush or dry cloth to remove loose debris from both the top and underside of the pergola, paying special attention to hard-to-reach areas.
  • Washing: After removing loose debris, wash the pergola with a mild cleaning solution. Mix detergent, trisodium phosphate powder, and water, and apply it using a soft sponge, cloth, or soft-bristled brush. Scrub gently to prevent surface damage. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose to remove all cleaning solution residues, preventing streaking or spotting.

Gutter and Downspout Maintenance

For StruXure pergolas equipped with gutters and downspouts, it’s crucial to keep them clear of leaves and debris to ensure proper drainage and prevent potential damage:

  • Inspection: Regularly inspect gutters and downspouts for blockages.
  • Cleaning: If blockages are found, use a long, flexible brush or a plumber’s snake to carefully dislodge debris.

Addressing Mildew and Stubborn Stains

Environmental factors can lead to mildew and other marks on your pergola:

  • Mildew Removal: To remove mildew, mix one cup of bleach with one gallon of water or use a mixture of warm water and oxygen bleach. Apply gently with a soft brush to affected areas.
  • Stubborn Stains: For tough stains like tar or caulking compounds, start by manually removing as much as possible using appropriate tools. For residual stains, apply a chemical solvent such as Motsenbocker’s Lift Off, following the manufacturer’s instructions. After treatment, rinse the area thoroughly with water to remove any solvent residue.

Low-Pressure Power Washing

If you choose to use a pressure washer:

  • Settings: Keep the pressure at the lowest setting (1500-2000 PSI) and maintain at least a foot of distance from the pergola’s surface to protect the structure.
  • Nozzle: Use a 25-degree nozzle (the green nozzle) for effective cleaning without harming the pergola.
  • Test Area: Before full application, test the pressure washer on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure it does not damage the pergola’s surface.

Professional Maintenance Services

For additional assurance, StruXure offers an optional maintenance program, StruXure Care, where certified dealers provide thorough inspections, light pressure washing, and lubrication of track pins. This service helps keep your system looking and functioning like new year after year.

By adhering to these maintenance practices, you can ensure that your StruXure pergola remains a beautiful and functional centerpiece of your outdoor space for years to come.
